Understand more about Micro-Credentials

Pan-Canadian Micro-Credential Definition

A micro-credential is a certification of assessed competencies that is additional, alternate, complementary to or a component of a formal qualification. (adapted from Oliver, 2019)

Guiding Principles

  1. Micro-credentials are a complement to traditional credentials (certificate, diploma, or degree).
  2. Micro-credentials are subject to a robust and rigorous quality assurance process.
  3. Micro-credentials represent competencies identified by employers/industry sectors to meet employer’s needs.
  4. A micro-credential represents functional ability in one workplace competency.
  5. Micro-credentials document how the competency was assessed.
  6. Micro-credentials are stackable, providing clear and seamless pathways across different credentials (both non-credit and credit)
  7. Micro-credentials are based on mastery of a competency, not on time spent learning.
  8. Micro-credentials are secure and portable.
  9. Micro-credentials are to follow institutional approval processes.

MCSC supports the Pan-Canadian Micro-credential definition and principles.

Who are micro-credentials for?

Micro-credentials are best suited for those who:

  • Lack the time for a traditional credential.
  • Need flexible program options.
  • They are building on an existing skill set to further their career (this is especially true in the post-baccalaureate market).
  • They already have skills that need to be validated by an external source.
  • They are developing entry-level skills where they do not yet need broad knowledge/experience.
