Description
The Manitoba Construction Sector Council (MCSC) has collaborated with the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC), along with industry partners, to create a steel fitter course that would address specific training gaps in the steel industry throughout Manitoba. This program is designed for experienced steel workers currently employed in the steel industry.
The fitter course combines classroom and practical learning activities. It will teach technical skills (knowledge of tools, equipment and processes). It will embed safety training and Essential Skills throughout the program (reading, measurement document use, communication, physical dexterity, working with others).
Career opportunities can be found as a steel fitter in the steel industry in Manitoba.

Course Duration
8 weeks, full-time
Entrance Requirements
- Current employment in the steel industry
or
- Previous relevant experience in the steel construction industry
Accreditation
- After completing the coursework, students will receive a certificate from MCSC/CISC
or
- Assiniboine Community College (ACC)
Completion Requirements
Successful completion of the 10 modules, including:
- classroom assignments
- practical applications
- tests
Credit Transfer
Learners may apply to apprenticeships or colleges for transfer credit.

Module 1: Demonstrate knowledge of safe working practices & procedures
Module 2: Use & maintain tools & machinery
Module 3: Demonstrate basic welding & distortion control skills
Module 4: Complete mathematical calculations
Module 5: Interpret drawings, specifications & codes
Module 6: Develop templates & layout patterns
Module 7: Prepare fabrication & detail materials
Module 8: Assemble subcomponents & components
Module 9: Develop & complete a sequence of assembly
Module 10: Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of steel & aluminum
