Description
Manitoba Home Builder’s Association approached Manitoba Construction Sector Council to develop a at work technician course that would address skill gaps in the homebuilding industry. After completing the Flatwork Technician certificate course, the graduate will be knowledgeable about proper procedures to place, consolidate, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect concrete at work. This program focuses specifically on at work techniques, such as driveways, garages, and sidewalks, as they relate to residential construction. It is designed for the entry level construction worker who wants a specific skill set to and or keep employment. The at work technician course will teach technical skills (knowledge of tools, equipment and processes) and will embed safety training and Essential Skills throughout the program (reading, measurement, document use, communication, physical dexterity, working with others).

Entrance Requirements
- Experience in the construction industry or related fields (i.e. landscaping, maintenance etc.)
- Grade 12

Concrete Flatwork Technician Certi cate – American Concrete Institute (ACI), Manitoba Chapter

- Pass ACI Concrete Flatwork Technician Exam (70% or higher)
Credit Transfer

Course Modules
Module 1
- Identify the essential skills and job duties of a general construction labourer and concrete finisher.
Module 2
- Explore career options available for a concrete finisher.
Module 3
- Demonstrate knowledge of safety guidelines when working with concrete.
Module 4
- Demonstrate knowledge of the basics of concrete.
Module 5
- Demonstrate knowledge of the safe operation of power and hand tools required for concrete at work.
Module 6
- Demonstrate knowledge of building forms.
Module 7
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic math skills and use appropriate measurement and numerical calculations to mix concrete.
Module 8
- Demonstrate knowledge of selected topics for certification as a Residential Concrete Flatwork Technician.
Module 9
- Demonstrate basic transfer of knowledge to the worksite.
