Job Description

We are seeking candidates interested in training for a career as a Mechanical Technician.
As a Mechanical Technician Trainee at Manitoba Hydro, you will complete a four-year apprenticeship program which includes
on-the-job training, trade schools and formal classes at University College of the North (UCN in the Pas) that leads to Industrial
Mechanic (Millwright) Journeyperson status. Mechanical Technicians maintain and commission mechanical apparatus used in
electrical power generation, transmission, distribution, and converter systems. While in the program, participants receive rotational
training at various locations throughout the province and will be relocated to Northern Manitoba.
As a Mechanical Technician trainee, you will:
– assist Mechanical Technicians with installation, inspection, commissioning and mechanical maintenance of breakers,
transformers, refrigeration, air conditioning, heating systems, HVDC equipment and associated equipment such as
compressors, cranes, pumps, motors, fans, etc.;
– assist with servicing mechanical equipment and controls used to generate, convert, regulate, and control electrical energy in a
power system;
– perform all clearance procedures as per station and safety guidelines;
– be required to work a variety of shift schedules and will be transferred to different work centers within the duration of the term.

Job Details

Principal Duties

As a Mechanical Technician trainee, you will:
– assist Mechanical Technicians with installation, inspection, commissioning and mechanical maintenance of breakers,
transformers, refrigeration, air conditioning, heating systems, HVDC equipment and associated equipment such as
compressors, cranes, pumps, motors, fans, etc.;
– assist with servicing mechanical equipment and controls used to generate, convert, regulate, and control electrical energy in a
power system;
– perform all clearance procedures as per station and safety guidelines;
– be required to work a variety of shift schedules and will be transferred to different work centers within the duration of the term

Qualifications

Qualifications:
– High school graduate with a minimum of the following courses:
Mathematics 40S (Applied Math or Pre-Calculus) and English 40, with the willingness to take part in, and successfully
complete Physics 40S within a specified amount of time, if required.
OR
– Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Licence issued by the Province of Manitoba (or equivalent Provincial certification) and Grade
12 or equivalent, with the willingness to take part in, and successfully complete Applied or Pre-calculus Math 40S and Physics
40S within a specified amount of time, if required.
OR
– Possess a two-year diploma in Mechanical Technology.
In addition, this Training Program requires you to:
– possess a valid Province of Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s Licence (intermediate or full);
– maintain a level of physical fitness and mental alertness appropriate for the duties you are performing;
– have good physical coordination; manual dexterity and be able to lift heavy objects from a variety of physical positions while
working at heights requiring bucket truck or ladder and while working in confined spaces;
– be capable of communicating effectively orally and in writing;
– have good hearing and accurate colour perception;
– have basic computer skills;
– be willing to acquire an approved set of personal hand tools;
– have a mechanical aptitude to satisfy all requirements of the position
