Job Description

Reporting to the Facilities Supervisor the incumbent oversees and performs required work on construction, renovations, repairs and general maintenance to buildings and contents at a Journeyman level. This position interprets working drawings and provides estimates of material costs. This position supervises and instructs apprentices, labourers and helpers and applies working knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, construction techniques and materials. It includes an averaged 40 hour work week with limited work on weekends or shift work.

Job Details

Principal Duties

Perform required work on construction, renovations, repairs and general building maintenance

Install and perform maintenance on building contents such as counters, cabinetry, ceilings, flooring, walls, doors, windows, furnishings, seating, and upholstery.

Oversee the work of contractors to check for completion

Assign tasks to and supervise helpers when available

Conduct inventory and ensure adequate supply available for current projects

Lead and assist the pest extermination program

Move furniture and supplies when required

Prepare estimates for work orders

Perform other related duties as assigned, including minor duties of other trades where certification is not required and the work does not exceed own limitations

Qualifications

Journeyman Certificate in Carpentry

Grade XII with minimum 3 years’ related experience in construction or building maintenance

Second trade experience beneficial: painter, upholsterer, bricklayer, locksmith, millwright, welding

Relevant experience in reading and following blue prints and shop drawings

Ability to prepare and maintain records, source suppliers and supplies

Knowledge of required materials and their proper use

Ability to safely operate and maintain carpentry and maintenance tools and related equipment

Ability to operate light automotive vehicle and powered equipment in a safe and effective manner

Current and valid Class 5 driver’s license (minimum)

Physically capable of performing duties assigned
